Overhanging

snow hanging so precariously
threatening those beneath
whacking away, a person
employed with a shovel

cherry picker high in the air
the effort is hard and cold
thump, down goes the threat

what has to be whacked off

the easy stuff falls first
then the stubborn, hard pieces,
first formed, melted and reattached
like niggling dangerous things that refuse to leave

maybe it will take a small pick
instead of a large implement
small whacks to release
little pieces of hardness
compounded since youth

what are my hard points
where are the overhangs
which hang on with tenacity

am I in the cherry picker
or is Spirit employed
with an implement of love
carefully thumping
until release

Spirit, I trust you
to help me let go
you are my companion in the work
in the air around me
moving
soundlessly
constantly
tapping

  1. Love this, Ev. “Maybe it will take a small pick” and “Where are the overhangs” perfect. Your words are perfect and cherrypicked.
